Kadugli Arrests: fewer arrested than previously feared
New information has revealed that around 150 civilians, rather than the 300 originally feared, were detained by Government Security Intelligence Forces on 30 September 2001. Nuba Survival remains deeply concerned for the fate of the civilians and is continuing to try to obtain further information about their situation. Nuba Agreement On Political Solution
The Nuba Allied Political Parties, established recently by the Free Sudan National Party, Nuba Mountains Union and Sudan National Party presented a position paper to the US Special Envoy for Peace in Sudan, John Danforth during his visit to Sudan between 11-13 November. The paper, signed by all three party leaders, explained the problems of the Nuba people within the context of the prolonged conflict in Sudan. (read more..)
Assassination of Judge Augustino
In another violation of the cease-fire, Judge Augustino Al Nur Shimela was assassinated by a squad sent from the Government garrison in Heiban on 19 November 2001. The judge, together with two others, was killed in his home near Kauda.

Sudanese Government Violates US cease-fire in the Nuba Mountains
Armed forces of the Sudanese Government have violated the one-month cease-fire in the Nuba Mountains agreed by both the Government and Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). The cease-fire and the period of tranquility was one of the four action proposals made by Senator John Danforth during his visit to Sudan in November.
Reports coming in reveal that fierce fighting between the two warring parties has been taking place in Korongo, south west of Kadugli, since 3rd December. The report indicates that 12 people were killed, among them 2 pregnant women. Twenty two civilians are being held in the government garrison and their fate is unknown. (December 2001)

It
has been reported by reliable sources in Dilling that more than 300 civilians
were detained by Government Security Intelligence Forces on 30 September 2001.
It is understood that the civilians were from villages in Korongo,
Abusunoon and Sugolle and were arrested on suspicion of being SPLA sympathisers.
Forcible resettlement of Nuba detainees
Thousands of Nuba detainees from SPLA areas settled two months ago in Koufa and Kanja were forcibly removed on 10 October to the “peace camps” situated around Kadugli. This operation comes at the time when people are preparing to harvest their crops which are only a few weeks away from being cultivated. (Nuba Vision, Oct 2001)
In a new move to crush the SPLA in the Nuba Mountain enclave, President al-Bashir has told the leaders of native administrations in the Nuba district of western Kadugli that the Government is going to arm them to fight their next of kin in SPLA-controlled areas. (Nuba Vision Oct 2001)
